I sit here, appalled by the latest example of American excess-the 18 year kidnapping and imprisonment of that now confused young woman in California. Rape and kidnapping are no longer enough, as more and more of these miscreants hold their victims in basements, false rooms, and storage facilities for years. There was a time when a simple trinket or trophy, of their sick aggression was enough to provide them with ample psycho-sexual pleasure. Of course the pleasure waned over time, and these predators sought out new victims.
So I'm actually weighing which is worse-the serial psycho or the settled psycho. The BTK rapist-killer committed so many murders that he either went into hibernation, or over-dosed on the sheer number of them. This allowed him a considerable period of dormancy. I wonder if he had had a secluded place to indulge his inhuman tastes, if he would have been satisfied with two or three, rather than the thirty or forty he eventually killed. BTK was an evil man, part chameleon, part demon. BTK was demonically-evil.
This Garrido jerk kept that woman and her kids in an outdoor compound like animals he was breeding. He allowed her to live, only because he needed a living host for his perversions, not because of magnanimity or altruism. Moreover, he filled her head since she was a child with his psychotic mix of religious zealotry and 60's era LSD flashback visions. Garrido inflicted damage upon that young woman and her children that will live on beyond their lives, in the genes of their offspring. Garrido is also suspected of committing a number of murders during the time he held Ms. Dugard captive. Phillip Garrido is crazy-evil.
So which is worse; demonic-evil or crazy-evil? In this race I'd have to call it a photo-finish. I am ethically against the death penalty, but these types of crimes threaten to make me allow a caveat into my thinking on the matter. Miscreants like these men go to great lengths to feed their pathological need for aberrant stimulation. Perhaps confining inhuman people like these in a humane environment bereft of stimulus is the most appropriate punishment.
